2014 SOS Details

Summer of Scriptures (S.O.S.) 2014!
This Summer ~ June 23-July 28

Long distance learning via daily blogpost assignments, facebook check-ins and live weekly small group sessions.

2014 Theme – “New Testament 101: The Gospel”
We will read through the New Testament portion of The Story (for teens) version of the scriptures - 10 easy-yet-powerful chapters excerpted from the NIV - during our five weeks together. All young adults who participate fully will also learn to recite the 66 books of the Bible, will gain a thorough knowledge of the narrative and content of the entire New Testament (the gospel story, the formation and journeys of the early church, and the letters), and will attempt to thoroughly answer the questions, “What is the Gospel?” and “What is our response to the Gospel?”

The Weekly Rhythms
Young adults will study and learn for 1 hour each day, 4 days a week (Mon-Thurs weekly), during the 6-week period. They will each gain financial sponsorship ahead of time to support their 6 weeks of hard summer work, and will earn an hourly wage ($3.00/hr) during the SOS program based on their work each day (plus a $3.00 weekly bonus for not missing a day on each given week – totaling $15/week in possible pay). There is also a $2.00/hr option - $60 total sponsorship required - each parent and young adult can decide which option fits them best.

The weekly schedule will be as follows:

Week 1 - Books of the Bible song, chapter 22 & and 2-min. recap video
Week 2 - Chapters 23-24 & video recaps, plus memorization

SUMMER OF SCRIPTURES (S.O.S.) 2013 - Proverbs

Purpose: To learn, study, and interact with the scriptures of the Bible - together with Jesus, the Lord of the scriptures, as well as with good coaches & mentors - during summer break.

Job Overview: S.O.S. is like a part-time summer job - participants in S.O.S. will be paid wages for their work each week. S.O.S. leader, parents and sponsors (grandparents, close friends or family) will together decide for their young adult what their weekly pay will be.

SOS Voyage Dates:
Voyage - Monday, June 10th - Friday, July 26th
End of Voyage Trip & Celebration --- Wednesday, July 31 - Saturday, August 3rd

Time Commitment: 1 hour of hard work each day on your own time - Monday through Thursday - and 1 hour of time with the whole group together each Friday. No S.O.S. work on the weekends.

Weekly Plan:
1. Proverbs 1
2. Proverbs 3
3. Proverbs 6
4. Proverbs 16
5. Proverbs 22
6. Proverbs 27
7. Proverbs 31

Daily Plan:
Mon-Thurs - Each day (for one hour) will include:
A. Interacting with and learning about the passage/s in a different way each day (reading it from various versions, reading commentaries, watching videos, reading supplementary material, answering questions, writing summaries and thoughts, etc) - Assignments will have a focus on teaching our young adults to "fish" for themselves rather than "catching the fish" for them.
B. Memorizing or reviewing specific verses from the material (Phrase 15 method)
C. Ask Jesus about it (Listening prayer w/ journal)
D. Check in on Facebook (Via a private Facebook group page)
Fri Afternoons - A couple Fridays will be via skype, and several in person together as a group. The group will check in, discuss the material that week, present highlights, and some weeks participate in special material-relevant outings together.

Pay Schedule:
75% of weekly pay will be based on daily participation - 15% per day, 5 days each week
15% bonus pay for fully participating all 5 days in a given week
10% bonus pay will be based on quoting all of that week's verses on a given Friday
Example: if participant's weekly pay is 20$, and they do all of the above in a given week, they will be paid the full $20. However, if they only checked in / participated in 4 out of 5 days that week, and didn't memorize all of their verses, then they would only be paid for 4 days of work, would not receive the full-week bonus, and would not receive the memory verse percentage - total pay that week would be 60% (4 days x 15% each day) or $12. If they participated all 5 days but could not quote their verses that Friday, they would receive $18.
Parents / Mentors Job:
Part of this summer project is to help prepare parents to fulfill their God-given role in their young person's life (or to encourage a mentor to fill this role) - teaching, training, and nurturing them up in the way of the Lord. Therefore parents & mentors have a job also:
1. Pray specifically and thoughtfully for their young adult's spiritual transformation and maturation each day, Mon-Fri.
2. Interact with the material in the same way their young adult does each day, Mon-Fri, as much as is possible - and dialogue with their young adult around the material
3. Support the S.O.S. group in various ways according to their ability (parent supporters would be helpful to provide snacks on Fridays, attend a Friday session (or more) if possible, and provide feedback during the 7 weeks, and help support with other needs that arise as they come up according to their ability)

End Results - Full participants will:
-Have gained a foundational knowledge of and about the scriptures, particularly of the Proverbs
-Have interacted with the scriptures - and with the living Christ - for a total of 35 days during the 7 weeks
-Have memorized a whole gaggle of key verses from the Proverbs
-Have worked a part-time summer job for 7 weeks straight
-Have set a precious stone on their personal "spiritual building" of their heart and mind - which will never fade!
