Week 3 Study Guide (Psalms 46 & 91)



Day 1 (1 hour of study - Monday, July 23rd):

S.S. Logos Training: 10 mins - Read this Christian Research Institute article - "Introduction to Psalms"*Note in your journal anything you found particularly interesting.

Mess Hall: 10 mins - Read Ps. 46 & 91 in the New International Version (NIV) of the Scriptures.
*Note what jumps out at you in each Psalm in your journal.

First Mate: 15 mins - Read the FIRST HALF of Charles Spurgeon's commentary on Psalm 46 on our new Spurgeon page HERE (first half is in purple) we'll read the 2nd half tomorrow. Again - high-level reading, but some amazing and powerful insight into this Psalm.
*In field journal, note what thoughts or ideas came to you while reading this.

Star Gazing: 10 mins - Thoughtfully watch this youtube video HERE of President Obama reading Psalm 46 at the 9/11 ceremony. Then watch THIS video of Chris Rice's modern rendition of Martin Luther's 16th-century hymn, "A Mighty Fortress is our God" - a hymn that was written almost 500 years ago based on Psalm 46 (follow along with the words below the video on youtube). *In your journal, note what hit you while watching.

Tidy cabin: 10 mins - Memorize Psalm 91:1&2 (10 minutes, using the phrase 15 method HERE).

Day 2 (1 hour of study - Tuesday, July 24th):

S.S. Logos Training: 10 mins - Read this Christian Research Institute article on interpreting the Bible properly HERE*Note in your journal anything you found particularly interesting.

Mess Hall: 10 mins - Read Ps. 46 & 91 in the New Living Translation (NLT) of the Scriptures.
*Note what jumps out at you in each Psalm in your journal.

First Mate: 15 mins - Read the SECOND HALF of Charles Spurgeon's commentary on Psalm 46 on our new Spurgeon page HERE (2nd half of commentary on 46 is in black)- how did it go? *In field journal, note what thoughts or ideas came to you while reading this.

Star Gazing: 10 mins - Check out THIS youtube video by a Japanese professor offering Psalm 46 as a message of comfort shortly after the devastating tsunami in Japan in 2011. Also watch this video of images set to a choir singing Psalm 46 from the King James Version of the Bible - HERE*In your journal, note what hit you while watching.

Tidy cabin: 10 mins - Memorize Psalm 91:3&4, and review (practice quoting) Psalm 1&2. (10 minutes, using the phrase 15 method HERE).

Day 3 (1 hour of study - Wednesday, July 25th):

Mess Hall: 10 mins - Read Ps. 46 & 91 in The Message (MSG) version of the Scriptures.
*Note what jumps out at you in each Psalm in your journal

First Mate: 10 mins - Spend 10 minutes exploring the tools on blueletterbible.com in either Psalm 46 OR Psalm 91 (for example, look up words you find interesting using the "C" tool, read verses you especially like in different versions of the Bible using the "V" tool, check out the other tools there if you like, etc.) *Consider yourself a detective trying to uncover new insights and understanding. What did you discover? Note it in your journal.

First Mate: 15 mins - Read the first half (in purple) of Spurgeon's commentary on Psalm 91 HERE on our blog. (On that page, scroll down to Psalm 91 and read the purple section) Tomorrow we'll read the black.

Star-Gazing - 5 mins - Watch THIS youtube video put to Psalm 91 - read what it is all about in the main comments section below the video. *What's going on in this video? Note what came to your heart as you watched this.



Tidy cabin: 15 mins - Memorize Psalm 91:14 & 15 (using the phrase 15 method HERE) and review Psalm 46:1-4 (practice quoting them to refresh them in your memory). Tomorrow we will only memorize Psalm 91:16.

Day 4 (1 hour of study - Thursday, July 26th):

Mess hall: 10 mins - Read Ps. 46 & 91 in any version you want. *Note what hit you during this reading today- often God will say totally different things to us each day when reading the exact same thing.

First Mate: 15 mins - Read the 2nd half of Spurgeon's commentary on Psalm 91 HERE (picking up where we left off yesterday - just read the black portion). *Note any big insights that hit you while reading.

Star-gazing: 5 mins - Watch THIS youtube video of Psalm 91 put to song. *Note what it made you think of in your journal.

Tidy cabin: 15 mins - 
Memorize Psalm 91:16 (using the phrase 15 method HERE) and review Psalm 46:1-4 and 91:14-15 (practice quoting them to refresh them in your memory).

Conversing with the Captain: 10 mins - Spend this time listening to Jesus. With your journal in front of you, 1.) Quiet yourself inside, 2.) Focus on Jesus (picture yourself with Him somewhere perhaps), 3.) Pay attention to spontaneous flow (thoughts, words, pictures, feelings, and 4.) Write! (Write down EVERYTHING that goes through your head during this time of listening). *Note in your field journal what thoughts or impressions come into your mind (That is more than likely Him :)
